Planning Specialties
After graduating from UCLA with a degree in Economics, I was unprepared to manage my own personal financial life. Credit Scores, Emergency Funds, and 401(k)s were all foreign concepts to me and I felt overwhelmed. When I started learning how to best manage my own personal finances, I was hooked. I knew I found my professional calling and personal mission. At the time, I was working for one of the largest institutional investment firms in the world and I took it upon myself to prepare for a successful career transition into personal finance.
I earned my CFP® (Certified Financial Planner™) designation in 2010 to learn the fundamental skills of comprehensive financial planning, covering the topics of Insurance, Investments, Estate Planning, Education Planning, Cash Flow Management, and Retirement Planning. I then worked for a variety of private wealth management firms to cut my teeth in client service and the soft skills of financial planning. Next, I earned my MBA from the University of Michigan - Ross School of Business (graduating with High Distinction) to learn how to run a successful business and scale financial planning.
I launched Ballast Point Financial Planning to be your accountability partner in achieving your financial goals and dreams.

Shawn’s “A-ha!” career moment...
“When I graduated from UCLA, I was unprepared to manage my own finances. I was living beyond my means and my financial literacy skills were non-existent. I took it upon myself to improve my personal finance knowledge and I was hooked. I knew I found my professional calling and personal mission: To help others achieve the same sense of empowerment I felt when I took control over my financial life.”
On the personal side of things...
I met my wife Jen when we were both undergraduates at UCLA - Go Bruins! We are both California natives and enjoy very active lifestyles. We live in the Bay Area and on the weekends you may find us running a local road race, camping in Napa Valley out of our Subaru, fishing, spending time with our six nieces and nephews, skiing/snowboarding...pretty much anything outdoors. We also enjoy photography, travel, and ample amounts of sunscreen.
We love road trips and have driven across the country five times together. I have visited 48 out of the 50 states, but still need to hit Alabama and South Carolina.
I am an avid runner and in 2017 I set my personal best time of 2:50:22 (6:30 min/mile) at the California International Marathon. To date I have completed 13 marathons including finishing 19th overall at the 6th hardest marathon in the world as rated by the Weather Channel.
