[WORKSHOP] Working with LGBT+ Clients - an Interactive Workshop
We'll start with a quick overview of gender identity, cultural expression, sexual orientation and common terminology needed for the workshop. Then, we will move into small groups to role play and discuss case studies that highlight challenges LGBT+ people face related to financial planning, with the goal of fostering empathy, practicing inclusive language, and developing practical solutions. As a group, we will reflect on what we learned and create actionable take-aways to bring back and apply at your office. All attendees will leave with a glossary of terms, best practices when working with LGBT+ clients, resources to refer to when specific LGBT+-related topics arise while creating plans, and additional reading for continuous learning in serving diverse client needs.
Learning Objectives:
- Develop a solid understanding of the difference between biological sex, gender identity, cultural expression, and sexual orientation, and how they are or are not related to each other.
- Learn how to create an inclusive environment, use respectful language, and have a general understanding of the unique financial needs of LGBT+ clients and their traditional and/or non-traditional families.
- Walk out with actionable steps to apply in your office, strategies to use in financial planning with LGBT+ client-specific needs, and an up-to-date resource list to continue your learning.
