Strategies for Adding Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Initiatives in Solo and Boutique Firms
Even if you are a solo advisor, and plan to stay solo forever, you CAN make an impact in furthering our profession! After attending this session, firm owners and employees of small/boutique firms will come away with actionable steps to implement a DEI policy, hire and retain a diverse staff, and reach a wider audience of potential clients. The purpose of this talk is not to make the case for DEI, but to provide next steps for advisors who are committed to making a difference but aren’t sure where to start.
Learning Objectives:
- If you have a desire to diversify your client base: review your website. Look at the photos. Have a wide range of friends/family review your site. Are the photos/language “speaking” to a certain type of person? Will others feel welcomed?
- Consider having a DEI mission statement on your website. If you’re not explicit about working with folks from different backgrounds, many will assume the services are not for them. Use gender-neutral language and pronouns when you can.
- Make a commitment to work with firms who have diverse ownership. Employees and clients are increasingly aware of this. - Expand your network! Whether or not you are hiring, it’s important to be exposed to people who don’t look just like you.
