Financial Planning Considerations of Mixed Nationality Couples
This session will review the issues facing mixed nationality couples where one spouse or partner is a U.S. person (citizen or green card holder) and the other spouse or partner is a non-U.S. tax resident (aka “nonresident alien”). The major issues and considerations include legal versus tax residency;tax treatment of non-U.S. citizens; situs of assets; source of income; consequences of being a U.S. tax resident; the two major decisions that need to be made by such couples; identifying the various strategies that mixed nationality couples might use to mitigate income; and estate tax liabilities from the U.S. side.
