The presentation explores the distinction of being an advisor who understands the issues of longevity and how to wisely guide clients to plan for life beyond the early phase of retirement. Retirement life can span 30 years or more. Loss of independence is highly likely with very long life. This creates a need for advisors to be clear in offering advice about what clients may resist thinking about. There is more to being an extraordinary advisor than merely planning for clients’ financial security. You can distinguish your skill set from others in your field with the know how you will gain here.

• How to guide clients to anticipate the three pillars of successful retirement so as to reduce the risks of an unhappy retiree, even if financially secure.
• How to bring up emotionally difficult subject with clients in a respectful way, even when they resist.
• The basics of long term care decision-making, including living arrangements, caregiving and care receiving, and preventing elder abuse. This is not about long term care insurance.
